Michael Mina takes Coconut Teaszer Up-Scale

BY STEVE FORTUNATO | OCTOBER 15, 2008 | 4:14 PM | 0 COMMENTS

Hair-band fans are crying in their Jack Daniels tonight, as Southern California gets ready for tomorrow's opening of Michael Mina's long anticipated XIV, located on the (for some) hallowed grounds of Coconut Teaszers.  Designed by Philippe Starck, and in partnership with SBE Group (Katsuya, Sahara Las Vegas et al), Mina's new venture, has spared no expense in creating a European Chateau that features what Mina is calling: "social dining." Guests can deconstruct the standard Mina tasting menu fare, and create their own meal, as each dish is designed to share. (Big fan of the 'food as catalyst for community' movement)

As LA new openings go, odds are it might take a few moments to get a reservation, but as a widely acclaimed sage of cuisine, my guess is that it will be worth the wait.

If you listen carefully, you might be able to hear a throaty whisper floating through the atmosphere saying "more cow bell" as you enjoy your perfectly prepared pumpkin dumplings with stewed cherries, brown butter and sage.

Congratulations Mr. Mina!
