"Perhaps it was a good pick"

By Chip Hanlon | September 04, 2008 | 2:58 PM | 10 Comments

After last week's announcement of Sarah Palin as John McCain's running mate, I was surprised at the number of Republican friends who had misgivings about the pick.  Don't get me wrong, a majority of the folks I spoke with were excited about it, as was I, but there were still quite a few who worried about her experience and that in picking her McCain had squandered his ability to hit Obama on the issue of experience.

Well, the title of this post is the entire text of an email I received from one of those doubters while I was at the convention hearing Palin's speech live last night. I suspect other Republican doubters had the same reaction: relief, if not outright excitement.

In the arena, I can tell you there was only one emotion: jubilation. I've been to my share of UCLA-USC football games, saw the Angels win game 7 of the 2002 World Series at home and saw the Ducks close out the Detroit Red Wings in the conference finals on their way to their first Stanley Cup in '07; aside from some of those particularly memorable, raucous sporting events, the Xcel Center in St. Paul was as electric an audience as I've witnessed.

And I can't stand political speeches... despite being active, politically, I hardly attend actual speeches because they're always crafted with the specific intent of saying nothing interesting at all. In fact, Tuesday night's program featuring Fred Thompson and Joe Lieberman was a perfect example; apparently, those speeches came off well on TV, but I found them so canned that I wanted to jump off the roof of the stadium. It was painful to watch and there was no energy in that building on Tuesday at all.

Not so on Wendesday... that place was rocking. I'm actually glad I got to see Palin's speech, which might sound odd, but I wasn't in town for a week-long party (that's really all that happens at these conventions, it turns out...this was my first). I was there to stir up a little trouble, meeting with elected officials and groups to line them up behind the Lincoln Club's call for new GOP leadership in Congress, a July story which caused a few ripples in D.C. because national columnist Robert Novak broke it a few hours before we published the piece.

In the midst of the week-long Republican love-fest, I was one of the few GOP-ers there to pick a bit of a fight, but still managed to get into the building to see the Tuesday and Wednesday programs. Glad I saw Palin.

Speaking of troublemakers, I also came across a few of the Ron Paul folks. Cuckoo, cuckoo...have to write about that in coming days. Wow.

Back in the office (painfully early flight  home from Minnesota this morning) and back to posting here... see you tomorrow.

Ditto!

http://globalcapital.blogspot.com

After last night, I confess I'm a fan of Sarah Palin. She is gritty, tough, and smart! You go, girl!

Ditto about attacking Ron Paul's supporters! Ron Paul is the only true Constitutionalist left in Washington. He is the Thomas Jefferson of our era!

It strikes me as a little odd that one would seek to discredit a person and their ideas by attacking "a few" easy targets among those who support them. At both the Republican and Democrat Party Conventions over the past few weeks, I've seen a lot of people about whom I could easily say "Cuckoo, Cuckoo"! Just look at some of the hats they wore and the way they acted at times! They almost all looked more than a little nutty at times! Amongst the millions of Republicans and Democrats, I'm sure there are more that I could say "Cuckoo, Cuckoo" about than the relative few who have supported Congressman Paul this week in Minnesota. I know a lot of very classy, sophisticated, and sharp people among Paul's supporters, even though I'm not a Paul supporter myself.

I noticed that those who don't like the principles of the Founding Fathers often attack them instead, as if destroying their character will minimize the Constitution they gave us. They're easy to spread falsehood about, since they're not here to correct the record or defend themselves. But their principles stand by themselves, and the more I study them, the more I love the men who gave them to us. Congressman Paul is probably their greatest follower, and is unyielding in his adherence to the principles codified in our Constitution.

You're right...unfair of me

You're right...unfair of me to say that without backing it up. I will do so in the days ahead. My short reply in the meantime: actually, the extremists make up his base. Frustrated Republican voters explain most of the rest of his recent support. I'll write more on this by early next week.

Speaking of Great Sporting Events

Those were some epic games you attended. I was fortunate enough to see OSU vs. Michigan at the Horseshoe in both 2002 and 2006. They had to win these games to advance to the BCS national championship game. I was also at the UCLA vs. USC game in 06 at the Rose Bowl when UCLA knocked off heavily favored USC out of of the title game. That was great!

Forgive me, I'm a little fired up for the College Football season.

Go Bucks!

Indeed

It is going to be incredible. I'm long the Bucks but I did tune in to the USC vs. Va game last weekend and I was impressed. SC looked like the '84 Bears. Hopefully Tressel pulls out a few tricks out of that sweater vest of his! I'm looking forward to watching OSU de-commit Mark Sanchez get blitzed by Mr. Laurinaitus.
