The accompanying table presents a global index of healthcare companies which have received FDA approval for innovative products in the last 12 months. The index excludes all approvals for label expansions of existing products and reformulations of existing products to select only original product approvals -- including drugs, biological agents, and medical devices. The index demonstrated performance over the past year of +6.3%, which falls in the mid-range of its six benchmark funds -- outpacing the Pharmaceutical HOLDRs (NYSE: PPH), Healthcare SPDR (NYSE: XLV), and HealthShares Diagnostics (NYSE: HHD) while underperforming against the HealthShares Cardio Devices (NYSE: HHE), iShares Medical Devices (IHI), and iShares Nasdaq Biotech (NYSE: IBB).
