On Raising the Debt Ceiling: Then and Now

BY CHIP HANLON | JANUARY 13, 2011 | 11:52 AM | 3 COMMENTS

Guess the speaker:

The fact that we are here today to debate raising America's debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. Leadership means that "the buck stops here." Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better. I therefore intend to oppose the effort to increase America's debt limit.

Those were the words of the then-junior Senator from Illinois, Barack Obama-- in 2006!

Now that our national debt is fully 70% higher, he tells us that not raising the debt limit would threaten not only the nation's AAA debt rating, but the economy itself.

Problem is, recent history proves that is a bald-faced lie. Read why in this terrific post.

Not the objective man I once knew...

Every post is an Obama bashing fest, I'm definitely not a fan either, but bottomline, the BIGGEST bailout in history (TARP) was brought to fruition under the administration of Bush, you know, that clandestine, never-cater-to-vested-interests proponent of the Constitution. All of these guys are the same and this Red Team vs Blue Team stuff has got to end. I thought someone like yourself would be above this. We need a new party and I hope you become part of it.

Three small points in

Three small points in reply:

I was bashing Bush, too, and was bashing him from about 2002 on... didn't even vote for him for re-election. My record here is clear.

Listen, I'm very connected and sophisticated, politically. Agree or disagree w/my viewpoints, it just is. So here's the facts on 3rd parties: given the massive structural disadvantages they face, they'r a pure pipe dream. A more philosophical GOP is our best hope. Bringing that about is a tough fight, too, you'd correctly assert, but it's a much lower hurdle than creating a viable 3rd party.

Bashing on Obama? Get used to it-- I don't intend to remain silent as he pulls his supposed Clintonian transformation. He's going to run even farther to the right than folks expect, and for one reason: to protect his healthcare law. That's his one legacy. If we re-elect him, then he'll be able to run enough time off the clock over the ensuing 4 years that we'll never be able to repeal it. And our financial fate will be sealed as a result. Since I believe there has literally been nothing more important in the economic history of this country than defeating Barack Obama in 2012, don't expect my messaging to change much.
